Finding your audience
A persona framework that goes beyond 'women 25–45.' Turn a demographic into a specific human you write for.
"Women 25–45 interested in wellness" is not an audience. It's a filtering criterion for Facebook Ads Manager. An audience is a set of real humans with specific problems, specific language, and specific places they hang out.
You cannot write well for an audience you can't picture. Before you post anything, you need to be able to name three customers — real, named, preferably existing — and describe them to a stranger in 30 seconds.
The five-question persona
Skip the elaborate 40-field persona templates. Answer five questions and you have everything you need.
- Who are they? Job, age range, rough income band. Don't overthink it.
- What problem brings them to us? The specific pain point that would make them pay. Not "they want wellness" — "they want to stop feeling exhausted by 3 PM."
- What have they already tried? Competitors, DIY solutions, workarounds. This tells you what to NOT talk like.
- What do they search for at 11 PM on a bad day? The exact words they type into Google or TikTok when the problem is acute. This is your content vocabulary.
- Where do they spend time online? Which platforms, which accounts, which podcasts. This is your distribution list.
Where to find the real answers
Don't make them up. Spend a week on the following and you'll have better audience insight than 95% of businesses:
- Talk to five existing customers. 20 minutes each. Ask them the five questions. Record it. Transcripts are gold.
- Read reviews of competitors. Especially the 3-star ones. They tell you what customers wanted but didn't get.
- Search Reddit and forums for your topic. Find a subreddit where your audience complains. Read 50 threads.
- Look at who's in your DMs already. Even if you have 10 followers. Who are they? What else do they follow?
Narrow beats broad
New marketers always want to serve "everyone who might conceivably care." This produces bland content nobody stops for. The mathematics of attention are merciless: a post that is 10/10 for a narrow audience outperforms a post that is 5/10 for a wide one, every time. You can always widen later.
If a prospect reads your post and can't immediately tell whether it was written for them specifically, it wasn't.
The one-paragraph audience statement
When you're done, you should be able to write one paragraph that any new team member, freelancer, or AI assistant can read in 30 seconds and produce on-target content from. Example:
