The underrated network for local businesses. What works, what gets flagged, and the weekly rhythm we recommend.
Nextdoor is the quietest high-intent audience on the internet for local businesses. It has less volume than Facebook and less glamour than Instagram, which is exactly why it's underpriced. A single good post in a neighborhood of 5,000 can drive more foot traffic than a week of Instagram.
The Nextdoor mindset
Nextdoor is not a marketing platform disguised as a community — it's a community disguised as a marketing platform. Every single post is read by neighbors who will judge you socially, not just commercially. Approach it like you're writing to people who might bump into you at the grocery store.
What works
The neighborly introduction
A once-a-quarter "hi, we're here, here's who we are" post works remarkably well. Include your first name, how long you've been operating, and one specific thing people can ask you.
"Hey neighbors — Sarah here, I run the new bakery on Elm. We've been open three weeks. If anyone has questions about our sourdough starter (which is 14 years old and came with me from Vermont), happy to share. Also we have free bread ends on Sundays."
The helpful answer
When a neighbor asks for a recommendation and you're genuinely the right answer, a warm reply is worth ten regular posts. Always acknowledge competitors in the area too — it makes you look trustworthy, not desperate.
The useful tip
Posts that are genuinely useful to neighbors regardless of whether they hire you. "How to tell if your HVAC is short-cycling" from an HVAC tech. "Three things realtors check when pricing in this neighborhood" from a realtor. You're giving away a 5% tip and earning trust that pays back in hundreds of percent.
The behind-the-scenes
A photo of you at work with a 1-paragraph caption. Real humans run small businesses — showing it makes people more likely to call you than the faceless chain.
What gets flagged or ignored
- Direct sales pitches. "20% off this weekend!" posts get ignored and sometimes reported. Use the Local Deals feature instead.
- Cross-posted copy from Facebook. The tone doesn't fit. Rewrite for Nextdoor's voice.
- Posting in neighborhoods you don't live in. Business-only posting is tolerated but flagged more. Use it sparingly and in directly adjacent areas.
- Arguing in replies. Even one angry reply from a business can tank your reputation. If someone is unreasonable, thank them and move on.
The weekly rhythm
- Monday: scan the feed in your main neighborhood. Reply to any recommendation requests you're qualified to answer.
- Wednesday: post something useful (tip, update, behind-the-scenes).
- Friday: one community-focused post (thanks to a customer, local event shoutout, community contribution).
That's it. Three interactions a week in the right neighborhoods will outperform daily posting on any other channel for most local businesses.
