How social fits with SEO and email
These three channels aren't competitors — they feed each other. How to set them up so each one amplifies the others.
New marketers often ask which is "best" — social, SEO, or email. Wrong question. They're different tools that solve different parts of the same problem, and they work dramatically better together than any one alone.
What each channel is good at
Social: attention and trust
Social finds people who aren't actively looking for you yet. It introduces you, makes you familiar, and builds the "oh, them again" effect over months. Low conversion rate per view, but cheap and infinitely repeatable.
SEO: intent capture
SEO catches people at the exact moment they've decided they want what you sell. High conversion rate per visit, but slow to build and capped by search volume.
Email: relationship depth and repeat sales
Email lets you talk to people who have explicitly asked to hear from you. Highest conversion of any channel for most businesses, and unlike social, you own the list. But you have to build it first.
The flywheel
Done right, the three reinforce each other:
- Social → Email: Every social post has a CTA that drives to a lead magnet (PDF, template, mini-course) that requires an email to download.
- Social → SEO: Popular social posts become blog articles. The blog article gets SEO traffic for years after the social post has decayed.
- Email → Social: Email includes a "follow us on X" link. The most engaged audience members convert to followers, improving your social metrics.
- SEO → Email: Blog content captures email signups via content upgrades.
- Email → SEO: Asking your list to share your blog content boosts early engagement signals.
- SEO → Social: High-ranking blog content gets quoted and shared on social, driving followers back.
Which to build first
A sequence that almost always works:
- Month 0–3: Set up email capture on your site and build a basic email list from existing customers. Start social.
- Month 3–9: Publish 2 blog posts per month aimed at SEO. Keep building social and email.
- Month 9+: All three are humming. Your social content becomes blog content becomes email content.
The shared asset that changes everything
Build a single asset early that works on all three channels. A detailed how-to article on your site:
- Gets social posts that summarize and link to it
- Ranks for long-tail SEO queries
- Becomes an automated email for new subscribers
- Can be updated quarterly and re-promoted
One good cornerstone asset creates 100 derivative posts across all three channels. That's the actual leverage.
