Repurposing: one idea into ten posts
The system we use to turn one 30-minute recording or thought into a week of content across every platform.
Professional content teams don't come up with ten ideas a week. They come up with two good ones and repurpose each into five or more assets. You should do the same. The math alone is decisive: one idea that becomes ten posts is 10× your output per hour of thinking.
The core unit: a single good idea
A "good idea" is a specific insight, story, or take that stands on its own. Examples:
- A customer interaction that taught you something unexpected.
- A specific mistake you made and the lesson from it.
- A pattern you've noticed across multiple customers.
- A strong opinion you hold that most people in your field disagree with.
Capture ideas the moment they happen. A notes app works. Voice memos work. The worst thing you can do is trust yourself to "remember later."
The repurposing pyramid
Start with the biggest asset and step down. Each format below requires meaningfully less work than the one above.
1. The cornerstone asset (1 per idea)
A blog post, a YouTube video, a podcast episode, or a detailed email. This is where the idea lives in full. 1,000–2,000 words or 10–20 min of video. Do this once.
2. Platform-native long-form (1–2 per idea)
A LinkedIn post, an X thread, a Reddit comment. Take the core argument and reshape it for the platform's norms. Links back to the cornerstone.
3. Short-form video (2–3 per idea)
A TikTok / Reels / Shorts cut with the most hook-worthy moment. A talking-head 60-second explainer. A b-roll-over-text version.
4. Static posts (3–5 per idea)
A pull-quote graphic. A carousel explaining the idea in 8 slides. A meme that references the idea. A Nextdoor post if the idea is locally relevant.
5. Conversation starters (2–3 per idea)
A poll based on the idea. A question asking the audience's opinion. A contrarian take designed to provoke replies.
Total: one idea → 9–14 pieces of content. At 2 ideas/week, that's your content calendar fully covered with room to spare.
The workflow that makes this sustainable
- Monday: pick this week's 2 ideas. Record / write the cornerstone assets.
- Tuesday: extract the long-form and video cuts.
- Wednesday–Friday: create the static + conversation posts. Schedule everything.
- Next Monday: review performance, pick next ideas.
